English cocker spaniel - a good choice of dog?
Yes they do make a good choice and here are my reasons...
They are a medium-sized dog with long ears and a merry happy temperament.
They typically weigh in at between 25 and 35 pounds. As energetic dogs, they can take as much exercise as you are prepared to give but equally are content to pad around your home looking for the most comfortable place to lay, which in the wintertime, often means either by a radiator or a sunny spot.
Like many dogs, English cocker spaniels are territorial about their home and garden and make excellent house dogs.
As a medium-sized gun dog English cocker spaniels are a robust breed and generally maintain good health. Their life span ranges between 12 and 14 years. They vary in height; between 15 inches to 17 inches tall when measured to their shoulder.
It is assumed that they were introduced into Britain from Spain at around the time of Caesar’s invasion. Bred as a hunting dog, the name Cocker comes from their use to hunt woodcock in England. However, as a natural bird dog, English cockers are used to hunt many other types of birds as well.
Having a well-balanced temperament and generally good-natured, they make great companions for people who have the time to give them the exercise they need. They can also make good friends with children who want a robust and energetic dog to join them when out and about exploring perhaps in the woodlands or by the sea.
As the inspiration behind my children’s story Jacob’s Magic Ears, our English cocker spaniel has provided us with no end of fun and affection and while they do make great pets, they benefit from good training and a regular routine.
The story of Jacob’s Magic Ears, which is available on Amazon though my website https://susanmilston.com where while fictional, does include in the narrative, a number of learning points, which for those considering an English cocker spaniel as a new puppy will find both helpful and an enjoyable read.
